Literary forum inaugurated
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI: Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan inaugurated its literary forum on Saturday with the launch of an English translation of ‘Kambaramayanam’, authored by former minister H.V. Hande.
Participating in a function here, Dr. Hande read portions from the translated version, which he said took eight years to complete. He said the idea of translating the book came to him when he tried to get an English translation of the book and found none. It was then he thought: “Why not I undertake the project?”
What impressed him most was the conflict between personalities and leaders, introduced by the poet Kamban, which continued to hold good even today, he said.
Bhavan’s Chennai Kendra chairman V.R. Lakshminaryanan praised Dr. Hande’s effort. Chairman of Bhavan’s Literary Forum E.P.G. Nambiar spoke. Members who participated in the meet compared Kamban’s portrayal of women to the works of Shakespeare and Thomas Hardy.
