W. Rly. wins women’s title

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Western Railway (Mumbai) won the women’s title in the Panimalar-John Memorial all-India volleyball tournament here on Saturday. In the final, the Railway team defeated the National champion KSEB (Thiruvananthapuram) 27-25, 25-15, 18-25, 25-19.

In a way it was a sweet revenge for the Mumbai side for KSEB had often been the winner whenever the two met. The last major clash came in the National League final where KSEB came up trumps. But then the Kerala side hardly looked the champion outfit in the final and this meant Western Railway could dominate from the start.

The lanky K.J. Shibi, an India player, was the side’s mainstay as she rallied her team around to make it a winning finish. Shibi was adjudged the ‘best attacking player’ of the tournament.

What helped Shibi in her effort was the fine setting by Princy and an admirable role that libero Priya Mol played.

For a change KSEB looked subdued. The normally enterprising Prajisha looked off colour and perhaps this rubbed on the others too.

The way KSEB came back in the third game to take a handy lead and then grab the game, there was promise of an extended contest. But it was not to be.

Western Railway’s Princy was adjudged the ‘best setter’ and Dr. Sivanthi’s team’s Jagdeeswari got the ‘best libero’ award. Joint Commissioner of Police M. Ravi was the day’s chief guest.

IOB meets BPCL

In the men’s section, Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) will play Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) in the final on Sunday. In Saturday’s semifinals, IOB beat Indian Bank 29-31, 27-25, 26-24, 26-24, while BPCL rallied to down Southern Railway 17-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-22, 15-10.
