Thiruvananthapuram: The Trivandrum Residents Apex Council (TRAC) has sought the Chief Minister’s intervention to secure the release of 8.1 hectares of land for the construction of a cricket stadium of international standards at Kudappanakunnu. A press note issued by TRAC president Amaravila Ramakrishnan Nair and general secretary K.T. Roy said the unused land belonging to the Department of Animal Husbandry would be ideal for the project. “The government does not have to waste time looking for a site outside the city when the department has 16.2 hectares of unused land near the proposed Collectorate building at Kudappanakunnu. Another advantage is that there would be no need to displace people.” The TRAC leaders said, “As a State lobbying to host the next National Games, Kerala is poised for major strides in sports infrastructure. The Kerala University stadium and the Lakshmi Bai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE) are being equipped with synthetic track, an international swimming pool is coming up at Pirappancode and a velodrome on the LNCPE campus. In this context, the absence of a cricket stadium is a major drawback.” The press note urged the Department of Sports to step up efforts to secure the land.
