Brush only to style hair, say experts

Staff Reporter

Brushing hair 100 times a day helps hair growth

HYDERABAD: Shaving hair frequently increases growth and thickness is a myth. The truth is that there is no relation between the two. Hair oil promoting hair growth is a myth. The fact is that oil does not nourish but is useful to shape unruly hair. These pearls of wisdom are from none other than the dermatologists themselves.

Natural cleansers like soap-nuts and homemade remedies are far better bet for nourishment than chemical based nourishing agents available in market. Oil does not help reduce dandruff. On the contrary, persons with dandruff should use less oil or apply now and then. Brushing hair 100 times a day helps grow hair. Experts suggest brush hair only to style.

These and much more common myths surrounding hair were busted in a workshop on Trichology, organised by AP chapter of Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists (IADVL) at Gandhi Medical College on Sunday.

Trichology

“Trichology is scientific study of health of hair and scalp. Top Trichologists from various parts of India are participating in this workshop. This will help post graduates and senior doctors to update their skills with respect to the latest developments in the field,” informed V.K. Somani, President (AP chapter) IADVL.

There is another myth that dermatologist is only a skin specialist. “A dermatologist is expert in skin, nails and hairs. However, people are unaware of it and consult unreliable sources for hair related ailments. We have also organised a quiz competition for postgraduates,” Mr. Somani informed.

Over 15 Trichology experts presented scientific papers in the workshop. Over 250 participants, including students and graduates, participated in the one-day workshop on Trichology.
