This Day That Age
Addressing a big gathering in Trichur on April 26, Mr. Nehru emphasised the importance of sticking to India’s traditional ideals of moral, ethical and spiritual aims of life while working for material prosperity. Pointing out that these ideals had made for the strength and vitality of India, which it represented for centuries, Mr. Nehru asked whether if they were to give up these ideals for the sake of material prosperity, would it not be too great a price to pay. Deprecating attempts to bring about quick changes through violence, Mr. Nehru said that those people who imagined that by some magic formula or violence they could bring about change for the better, forgot that this kind of change takes “a mighty long time, if it is done at all." Striking a personal note at the conclusion, he said, “In the few years that are left to me, I hope that I will have the strength to carry on this work, which is yours and mine because there is no greater privilege on earth than to work for a great cause.”
