Coaching programme for weaker sections

Special Correspondent

Sponsored by ASSOCHAM, it aims at improving their competence for jobs

JAIPUR: The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) has sponsored a coaching programme here for youths belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Muslim community to improve their competence and aptitude for the private sector jobs. The training’s emphasis will be on development of skills of college and university students.

The three-month coaching – beginning in the first week of next month – will be conducted free of cost by a newly launched non-government organisation, Progressive Muslim Social Circle (PMSC). Assocham will provide funds for paying remuneration to the faculty, purchasing study material and renting the building. PMSC president and former civil servant A.R. Khan said here on Sunday that the coaching would have three segments of proficiency in basic computer operations, English language learning and grooming of personality. Students who have passed out 12th standard will be eligible for admission to the course.

Assocham, which has been taking up the issues of the telecom, information technology and BPO industry, has also made a strong case for providing a substantial percentage of budgetary allocation to promote vocational education. According to the industry body, the vocational training percentage in the country is at a meagre 5 per cent of its total employed workforce.

Mr. Khan said while 50 per cent of seats in the coaching programme would be reserved for SC students, 25 per cent each would go the ST and Muslim candidates. “This arrangement will ensure that the youths of disadvantaged sections get an opportunity to come over their capacity constraints while looking for jobs in the highly competitive private sector.”

The PMSC will give priority to the students belonging to below poverty line (BPL) families in the intake for the course. Mr. Khan, citing the Justice Rajinder Sachar Committee’s findings, said the livelihood scenario for Muslims could not improve unless adequate attention was paid to availability of finance, skill development, innovations and a change in the mindset of employers.

Mr. Khan affirmed that the coaching programme would prove to be a landmark initiative for empowerment of weaker sections.
