ASSURING ALL HELP: Chief Minister N.Rangasamy presenting a sewing machine to a woman representative of the Puducherry Tailors’ Association in Puducherry on Sunday. PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry Tailors’ Association on Sunday submitted a charter of demands to Chief Minister N. Rangasamy at its 43rd annual conference held here. The demands included creation of a separate board to implement welfare measures for the tailors in the Union Territory. The association also wanted the government to provide a monthly pension of Rs. 1,000 to the tailors who had crossed 58 years. A resolution adopted at the meeting said the government could provide the amount through Unorganised Welfare Society. They also demanded an increase in the government’s assistance for meeting funeral expenditure from Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 10,000. The association sought an increase in the Deepavali bonus to Rs. 2000 from Rs. 400. The association appealed to the government to bear the insurance premium cost of Rs. 100 for the tailors as it was done in Tamil Nadu. They also asked the government to provide free bicycles, besides considering their longstanding demand for conferring Kalaimamani title to the tailors. Speaking after distributing sewing machines to indigent members of the association, Mr. Rangasamy promised all assistance to the tailors.
