AFT workers’ bandh unnecessary: Rangasamy

Special Correspondent

PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Sunday said the bandh, called by the coordination committee of the Anglo-French Textile Mill workers on Monday to highlight their demands, was unnecessary.

Shortly after holding discussions with police officials, he told reporters that the officials concerned had been asked to take steps to maintain law and order during the proposed bandh.

Instructions had been given to take stern action against those who indulged in acts which breached peace and law and order, he said. Adequate protection would be given to ensure that offices and business establishments functioned normally and fleets were operated without any problem, he added.

The government had announced an interim relief of Rs.1,000 for the mill workers, though the mills had been incurring heavy losses, he said, adding that against this backdrop the bandh call was unnecessary.

More than 500 policemen would be deployed in the town and suburban areas to prevent any untoward incident during the bandh, a senior officer said.
