Andhra Pradesh
Coastal corridor opposed
Staff Reporter
Kakinada: Human Rights Forum (HRF) State secretary V.S. Krishna has expressed apprehension that the industrial corridor proposed to be developed along the entire coast of Andhra Pradesh would have a devastating impact on fishermen and other communities dependent on the sea. He charged the government with preparing ground for setting up the project in blatant violation of the CRZ Act and other laws, and told newsmen here on Sunday that efforts to gather project details through the Right to Information Act did not bear fruit as the government was firm on keeping it a clandestine affair.
Chalo Visakha
Mr. Krishna said that the government planned to acquire 1.5 lakh acres, mostly fertile agricultural land, for the Petrochemical Investment Region project in Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts in the first phase.
To create awareness on the adverse impact of the proposed coastal corridor and SEZs, the Industrial Coastal Corridor Nirmana Vyatireka Porata Samiti would organise a public meeting at Gurajada Kalakshetram in Visakhapatnam on May 3.
Environmentalist Medha Patkar, K. Balagopal (HRF), S. Seshaiah (APCLC), retired IAS officer B.D. Sarma and others would participate.
