Seeking recognition for women’s rights

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: This small booklet in Kannada tries to chronicle the plight of women in Karnataka, and seeks to draw the attention of politicians to various issues related to them. “Chunavane 2008: Mahileyara Hakkottayagalu,” (Demand for women’s rights) brought out by several women’s rights groups, seeks to spread awareness on such topics and urges the people to vote for a party that supports women’s rights.

Priced at Rs. 2, the booklet released on Friday also contains two cartoons illustrative of the hypocritical practices of politicians during the elections, and has been released in the context of the coming polls. Releasing the booklet, Sunanda Jayaram, president of the women’s wing of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, said political parties should recognise women’s rights.

She said reservation of seats for women alone would not change the state of women’s affairs. Instead, she said, if women’s rights groups were to get political parties to agree to a set of demands, they stood a better chance of bringing about a change.

The groups plan to distribute these booklets at various venues from May 6, and a translation of the booklet into English is being prepared. Women’s rights activists from various organisations such as the Samantha Mahila Vedike, Vimochana, Street Jagruthi Samathi, Pedestrian Pictures, H.R.L.N, Hengasara Hakkina Sangha and Manasa, organised the event.
