Bhubaneswar: While Orissa sizzles with the mercury hovering around 40 degrees, inhabitants of the Nandankanan zoo can take it easy as new water tanks have been constructed and water sprinklers are at work to help animals beat the heat. Zoo director Ajit Patnaik said as many as 46 new water tanks have been constructed in the enclosures of antelope, swamp deer, spotted deer, mithun, barking deer, thamin deer, cassowary and the tiger safari kraal. The new tanks were regularly filled, water changed every day, while old water tanks have been repaired, he said. A unique water sprinkler system was also operating in the tiger enclosures to enable the big cat beat the heat, Patnaik told PTI here. Ice cold water was being supplied to leopards, squirrels monkeys, cassowary, emu and birds, he said. The enclosures of birds have nets and water sprays to keep them cool, he added. - PTI
