Parties neglect youth in ticket allotment

Staff Correspondent

Most of the candidates are aged above 50 in Hassan district

HASSAN: Political parties in the district seem to have ignored the youth while allotting ticket for Assembly elections, though they had promised to do so.

At a meeting of Janata Dal (S) workers here recently, the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda said that this party was built by the youth and he would field more young candidates in the coming elections. He had also announced that at least one woman would be fielded in every district. But his party seems to have done little in this direction.

Even most of the candidates fielded by the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party are aged above 50.

Though the All-India Congress Committee General Secretary, Rahul Gandhi, recently said that the youth should be encouraged in politics, his party seems to have ignored his call.

The former Minister H.C. Srikantaiah of the Congress, who is 83, is contesting from Shravanabelagola. Other candidates Shivaram from Hassan, Sanna Swamy from Sakleshpur, G.V. Siddappa from Arasikere, Y.N. Rudresh Gowda from Belur and A. Manju from Arakalagudu aged above 50. The only exception is Anupama, who is contesting from Holenarsipura against the former Minister H.D. Revanna of the Janata Dal (S). She is 38.

In Janata Dal (S), H.B. Appannaiah, who is contesting from Belur, is 70. Mr. Revanna (Holenarsipura), H.S. Prakash (Hassan), H.K. Kumar Swamy (Sakleshpur), C.S. Putte Gowda (Shravanabelagola), K.M. Shivalinge Gowda (Arasikere) and A.T. Ramaswamy (Arakalagudu) are in their Fifties.

In the BJP, retired tahsildar Nirvanaiah, who is contesting from Sakleshpur, is aged above 65, while H.K. Suresh and B.M. Ravi are below 50 and Anand Shivappa, K.M. Srinivas, Shivarudrappa and Nanjunde Gowda are aged above 60.

There are 14 independents in the fray.
