The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority generates ideas for the city as a planning body. The Metro Rail – an idea mooted by the CMDA – has now taken the shape of a Special Purpose Vehicle. The Authority has commissioned a traffic study that would contribute towards the comprehensive mobility plan for the city. We have proposed multi-modal transport systems – for instance, the Outer Ring Road would have provision for rail transport along the central median. As the city centre becomes congested, people need to move out towards the suburbs. This would require the complementary facility of easy transport into the city from the suburbs.
