Tamil Nadu
This refers to the reports on the Tamil Nadu Government’s decision to buy back a tiny part of land from Hindustan Teleprinters Ltd., Guindy, published in The Hindu dated 15 and 17 April. I left the services from HTL Ltd. under the voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) by February 2000. The VRS compensation was paid on pre-revised pay but the HTL management gave a commitment in writing that “subsequent to revision of wages, the VRS compensation shall be recalculated as per the revised pay and difference shall be paid.” The wage revision was settled by February 2001. Though I have been paid the arrears of wages subsequently, the VRS compensation as per the revised pay has so far not been paid. I would request the authorities concerned to arrange for the payment of the revised compensation. B G Ramakrishnan Kilkattalai Drainage system neededA long-pending plan for constructing drainage system in Tiruvallur Municipality is yet to materialise. In the absence of sewerage, sewer water stagnates on every street, posing a serious health hazard. The streets have also now become unusable owing to the stagnation of sewage. K Ravichandran Tiruvallur Concrete benchesMarina road footpaths and side-lanes are used by a large number of persons going for early morning and late evening walks. There were a number of sturdy concrete benches with back rests at the side ways, used by people for short rests during walks. Many of them have got broken and some remain vandalised. The authorities concerned should replace the broken benches and also provide benches. P.R. Chandran, Triplicane Railway reservation buildingI thank the authorities concerned for shifting the Chinthamani Complex, Southern Railway, Anna Nagar reservation office to a spacious and convenient place on the ground floor, in a vacant land adjoining the ICF (Furnishing Complex) on 3rd Avenue, Anna Nagar. We were all surprised when the Minister of State for Railways E. Velu inaugurated this reservation centre on March 6, 2008. No doubt, this centre will be a boon to all sections of traveller in and around Anna Nagar. My only request is that this building could have been constructed as a magnificent piece of architecture to match the commercial buildings in Anna Nagar. Further the building should be fully air conditioned. When the Railway Minister is all out for providing modern amenities to the passengers, my suggestion shouldn’t be a major obstacle. Joseph Tharian, Anna Nagar
