VISAKHAPATNAM: Members of the Telugu Nadu Steel Employees Council, affiliated to Telugu Nadu Trade Union Council (TNTUC), will go on strike on May 7 along with CPI and CPI (M) to oppose privatisation and disinvestment. TDP city president C.M.A. Zaheer Ahmed told the media persons on Sunday that the salary of the contract workers should be at least on par with the salary of the lowest paid permanent employee. He pointed out that when Visakhapatnam Steel Plant acquired 26,000 acres of land from the Gajuwaka farmers, jobs were promised to 15,000 displaced persons. However, only 6,300 of them were provided permanent employment so far and that too only 5,000 of them were working as permanent employees in the steel plant at present.
