ANANTAPUR: A youth from Pulakunta village in Hindupur rural mandal, Nagaraju (25), was allegedly tortured to death by the police in the rural police station in Hindupur town on Sunday night. The police, however, denied the allegation and explained that the person had committed suicide by hanging in the bathroom around 8.30 p.m. According to information reaching here and the police, Nagaraju was picked up by the police in the afternoon after he had allegedly killed his wife Shantamma (20) for additional dowry in his house in the village. The woman belonged to Kotipi village in the same mandal. Torture allegedThe police allegedly tortured him in their custody, ultimately leading to his death. However, Inspector Ramakrishna and Hindupur DSP O. Chandrasekhar Reddy explained that Nagaraju was simply questioned by the police and he was allowed to attend nature’s call in a bathroom on the police station premises after he requested for the same. When he did not return for more than 10 minutes the police went to the toilet and found him hanging to the window with a cloth. Brother of the victim, Bylanjaneyulu, alleged that his younger brother was tortured to death by the police. Activists of CPI and AIMIM also gathered at the police station and raised slogans against the police seeking action against those responsible for the custodial death.
