PONNUR (GUNTUR DT): A subsidised monthly ration of 20 kg rice and one kg each of dal and palm oil at a cost of Rs.115 will be provided to families having white cards from June, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy announced here on Sunday.

Addressing a public meeting at the Zilla Parishad High School grounds, the Chief Minister said that though the decision to supply dal and oil at subsidised price would entail an additional burden of Rs.385 crore, the Government has taken the decision to provide relief to the poor people reeling under the impact of spiralling prices.

Devoting much of his address to the various developmental programmes initiated during the last four years, the Chief Minister recalled the failure of the previous TDP regime to address the basic issues of rural poverty, agriculture and unemployment.

The Government has set a target of providing loans worth Rs.10,000 crore to SHG women this year, in comparison to Rs.7,500 crore in 2007.

The decision to provide loan at a low interest rate of three per cent has given a new lease of life to the SHG movement. The Chief Minister had earlier inaugurated a pylon marking commencement of works relating to a drinking water scheme set up at the Island Centre under the U.A.D.S.S scheme at a cost of Rs.18.79 crore. He also distributed assets worth Rs.6.50 crore to SHG women.

Responding positively to the plea made by Municipal Chairperson N. Ruth Rani, Mr. Reddy assured that the proposal to set up a Polytechnic College would be looked into. He also promised that a grant of Rs.1 crore would be given for the construction of a new municipal office building, Rs.50 lakh for repair of burial grounds and Rs.1.20 crore for repair and laying of C.C roads in various wards.
