“DMK has realised Periyar’s dreams”

Staff Reporter

M.K. Stalin

DHARAPURAM: The DMK Government, now and in the past, has always fulfilled Periyar’s dreams, Minister for Local Administration and Rural Development M. K. Stalin has said.

Addressing a gathering after unveiling a Periyar statue here on Saturday, he said it was the DMK Government led by C. N. Annadurai that legalised inter-caste marriages, in tune with a resolution passed by Periyar at a Dravida Kazhagam conference in 1929. In 1989, 60 years after Periyar made the demand, the DMK government enacted legislation giving women equal rights in property. Likewise, 90 years after the Dravidian leader wanted upgrade of the Erode municipality, the present government had made it a Corporation.

To create a just society, the DMK government in 1996 announced the samathuvapuram scheme to help people of all castes and communities live in peace and harmony.
