The University Grants Commission have accepted the Report of the Conference on Problems of Teaching Englishthat was convened by the Commission in March in New Delhi. The Commission has sent copies of the report to all the universities in India, the Government of India, all State Governments, the All-India Council for Secondary Education, and the Inter-University Board of India and has requested the universities to communicate to the Commission their views and comments in three months. The conference discussed four important aspects of the problem, viz., teaching of English in secondary schools, teaching of English in the universities, training of teachers of English and the study of linguistics in India with special reference to language teaching. It also examined the possibilities of using audio-visual and mechanical aids in teaching English.
