On home births

This refers to the article “A passion project for home births” (April 26). It is interesting to know that the demand among women in the U.S. and the U.K. for the right to give birth at home without intervention is on the rise. Home births and the traditional role of midwives were significant in our Indian villages where there were no hospitals or maternity facilities. Midwives still exist in rural places and render their services to people who cannot afford to go to hospitals.

Significantly, one does not need hi-tech machines and drugs to give birth to a healthy child. The institution of midwives should be revived. Women should certainly have more choice and nothing can be better than home births.

Anupama Yadav,

Ghaziabad
