Night race on street circuit

SINGAPORE: The world’s first Formula One night race here in September will be run anti-clockwise on a street circuit of public roads around the famous Marina Bay area. The race, one of three in the 2008 calendar to run anti-clockwise, is not only the first night race but also the first of Asia’s Formula One street races.

In September last year, Singapore received in-principle approval from the FIA for the proposed 5.067-km long street circuit, which passes historic landmarks such as the City Hall and modern buildings such as the Esplanade along the Marina Bay. The practice race sessions along the track will commence from September 26 and the qualifying session will be on September 27.

The main 2008 Formula One Singtel Singapore Grand Prix will be held on September 28.

Anti-clockwise

The cars racing through 61 laps around the anti-clockwise circuit, with 14 left and 10 right turns, will pass six slow corners in each lap. The track also offers three turns where the drivers will get opportunities to overtake. — PTI
