Gilchrist at his marauding best

Mumbai: Adam Gilchrist’s cricketing wit came to the fore at Nerul’s sparkling new D.Y. Patil International Stadium on Sunday night.

In pursuit of taking Deccan Chargers past the finish line and enabling its first victory in the DLF-IPL competition, the rugged southpaw from Australia blew to bits the suggestion that cricketers well into their 30s would find themselves out of sorts in this brand of cricket.

His compatriots Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath had come out with flying colours in the first week and on Sunday an inspired Gilchrist happily joined them with a sizzling 42-ball century.

His splendid effort not only bettered Andrew Symonds’s 47-ball century, but also forced a partisan crowd to applaud his feat.

Gilchrist’s unconquered 109, which included 10 sixes and nine fours, literally badgered Mumbai Indians already suffering from the absence of Sachin Tendulkar.

With three straight defeats Deccan Chargers, just like Mumbai Indians, was looking to turn the tide in its favour, especially after a gutsy and mind-blowing show of enterprise from Warne in the previous match at Hyderabad. Gilchrist too seemed to be running out of luck in his three previous innings.
