Departments told to work in unison

Staff Reporter

Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac.

KOZHIKODE: Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac has said that all departments must work in unison for best results and hierarchical hurdles must be overcome as far as possible.

He was talking to mediapersons at the venue of a Sales Tax Department review meeting at the Collectorate conference hall here on Monday.

Dr. Isaac said the State was in for a phase of sustained development and a different style of functioning of departments and officials was the need of the hour. “The focus now is to increase the allocation for infrastructure development such as roads, airports, industrial parks and the like. The allotment for these items which is 1 per cent now will be increased to 5 per cent by 2010-11.”

A beginning has been made with an initial allotment of Rs.500 crore to complete rail overbridges and improve infrastructure in major cities in the State.

Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi are already in for such development and Kozhikode too will get its due share under urban development programmes to fill the gap, Dr. Isaac said. “An extent of 130 acres was in the process of being taken over at Karipur as part of the airport expansion plan. The lion’s share of Rs.400 crore would be for land acquisition and it was up to the local people’s representatives to take the initiative in acquiring the land.”

Dr. Isaac criticised the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) for the hurdles in the implementation of schemes under the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project, despite the support and assistance it received from the government.
