Special Correspondent

HYERABAD: A threat of cyclonic storm is looming large over the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh following formation of a deep depression in south-east Bay of Bengal.

The deep depression that formed in the sea intensified into a cyclonic storm, about 550 km off Chennai on Monday morning.

The cyclonic storm, codenamed by India Meteorological Department as “Nargis”, however, remained stationary for the present, but gave sufficient indications of intensifying further and turning into a severe cyclonic storm.

An IMD bulletin said the phenomenon was likely move initially in a north-westerly direction and later in a north-easterly direction after taking a curvature.

The government has kept all the nine coastal districts on alert and asked their Collectors to get prepared to meet any eventuality.
