Trial work to begin at Brahmapuram plant

KOCHI: Treatment of waste on a trial basis will begin at the Brahmapuram solid waste treatment plant from May 7, District Collector M. Beena said on Monday. Ten truckloads of garbage would be treated during the trial period.

Dr. Beena visited the plant on Monday for the first time after taking charge as Collector. She urged the officials to take up and complete all pending works including land filling before May 7.

Works are being carried out with the aim of commissioning the plant on May 18, she said.

The Assembly Committee on Environment, which visited the plant last month, had pointed out some flaws in the construction of the plant. The plant would be completed rectifying all these problems, she said.

The construction of the approach road and protective wall, which was progressing slowly owing to summer rain, would also be completed before May 18, she said.

Dr. Beena was able to secure the permission of FACT to use its plot at Amabalamedu for dumping waste till the Brahmapuram plant was commissioned.

However, the FACT authorities had asked the Collector to find alternative land for waste disposal in case the plant was not completed by the scheduled date.

P.K. Nalan, Revenue Divisional Officer, Muvattupuzha; K.P. Rajan, engineer, Kochi Corporation; George Joseph and Sunil, representatives of FACT Engineering and Design Organisation, explained the working of the plant to the Collector.
