DEMANDING a PARITY: Workers of Swadeshi-Bharathi Mills observing a fast in Puducherry on Tuesday.

PUDUCHERRY: Employees of the Swadeshi-Bharathi Mills observed a fast on Tuesday to demand parity in Central government dearness allowance.

The dawn to dusk fast was observed by the workers owing allegiance to several trade unions including All India Trade Union Congress, Indian National Trade Union Congress, Centre of Indian Trade Unions, Labour Progressive Federation, Anna Thozhirchanga Peravai, National Labour Organisation, Pattali Thozhirchanga Council and Bharatiya Labour Union.

The mill workers had not received salary hike since 1994 except an interim relief of Rs. 600 in 2006. The administrative staff of the mill had obtained the Central DA in 1986 and received a higher pay scale than employees at present, the unions said in a release.
