Cuddalore
Cuddalore gram sabha meet will finalise beneficiaries CUDDALORE: The financial assistance for construction of tenements under the Indira Awas Yojana has been increased from Rs.20,000 to Rs.55,000 a unit. If the building comes up on hard soil, the allocation will be Rs.58,5000, Cuddalore Collector Rajendra Ratnoo said in a statement here on Tuesday. The gram sabha meeting to be convened on May 1 would have to approve the list of beneficiaries. The meetings would peruse the lists of beneficiaries under government programmes during 2007-08 and finalise the development works to be undertaken in each panchayat during 2008-09. Under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam, Rs.20 lakh was sanctioned for each panchayat, Rs.15 lakh for the designated works and Rs.5 lakh for general categories. It was mandatory for each panchayat to construct a library at the cost of Rs.2 lakh or convert an existing building into a library and provide books worth Rs.25,000 there. InfrastructureEach village should have a tank constructed at the cost of Rs.3 lakh-Rs.5 lakh, and either a school playground (Rs.1.5 lakh) or a community playground (Rs.1 lakh) should be set up. The concurrence of the gram sabha should be obtained for both categories of work. Every panchayat was allowed to spend Rs.10,000 a year (from its funds) on maintenance of the playground. The gram sabha meetings would also evaluate the works completed under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme and check attendance for the period from January 26 to April 30, 2008. These sessions would also address whether all those enrolled under the scheme had been provided with jobs, whether wages were paid promptly, and whether anyone was denied jobs.
