Puducherry government may take over cable TV operation

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: The government will consider taking over the control of cable television operations through a corporation, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy told the Assembly on Tuesday.

Replying to A. Anbalagan (AIADMK), he said the government was studying the steps taken by Tamil Nadu when it took over cable TV operations.

There were as many as 332 cable TV operators in Puducherry with a subscription base of 18,067 customers in Puducherry and Oulgaret Muncipality limits. Last year, the government collected a sum of Rs. 11, 97,840 as 10 per cent entertainment tax from the operators, Mr. Rangasamy said.

Challenging the accuracy of the data, Mr. Anbalagan said there were around 2.5 lakh ration cards and majority of the beneficiaries had cable connection at their home. The government had lost several crores of rupees as entertainment tax owing to administrative “mismanagement,” he alleged.

Agreeing to the member’s assertion that “subscription bases was under valued,”

Mr. Rangasamy said steps would be taken to rectify if there was any anomaly in the statistics provided by cable TV operators.
