Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Three journalists have been selected for the Foundation for People’s Journalism awards instituted by eminent journalist and Ramon Magsaysay award winner P. Sainath.

The first one carrying a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 was won by R. M. Uma Maheswara Rao, News Editor, Andhra Jyoti, Tirupati edition, for his article (part of a series) on displacement of farmers from land acquired for Special Economic Zones in Nellore and Chittoor districts.

Of the other two awards carrying cash prize of Rs. 10,000 each, V. Udaya Lakshmi, won the award for her report in Praja Sakthi, on lapses in implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee programme. The third one has gone to G. Srinivas, freelancer, for his article in Eenadu, on displacement of tribals in Visakhapatnam and East Godavari agency areas from mining projects.

The awards would be presented by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee at a function to be held at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram. K.R. Venugopal, former Secretary to Prime Minister and chairman of the foundation, and Mr. Sainath will participate. The awards were instituted to encourage Telugu journalists, who were striving to promote understanding of the problems of rural Andhra Pradesh by writing on issues relating to poverty, agriculture, dalits, education, public health and women.

The three were selected by a committee consisting of former Editor of Visalandhra Raghavachari, former Editor of Andhra Jyoti K. Ramachandra Murthy (presently with T-channel) and Principal Secretary, Rural Development, K. Raju.
