May Day rally to protest price rise

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Karnataka Workers’ Union is holding a rally in protest against price rise to mark May Day this year.

Union general secretary E.K.N. Rajan told presspersons here on Tuesday that workers in the unorganised sector had been severely hit by the rise in the prices of all essential commodities.

On the other hand, the public distribution system was in a shambles and even the poor were denied access to subsidised foodgrains because of the irrational norms used to determine the below poverty line (BPL) category, he added.

The land ratess and rents were going up in cities, resulting in all workers spending as much as 50 per cent of their income on house rents, said Mr. Rajan. No political party was focusing attention on the plight of unorganised workers or even working towards implementation of minimum wage norms, said union joint secretary R.D. Melchior.
