Parties complain to EC

BANGALORE: Leaders of major political parties have complained to the Election Commission that election officials in the State have been imposing all sorts of “unreasonable restrictions” on party workers and disrupting campaign in the pretext of implementing the code of conduct.

MLC and BJP leader Ganesh Karnik submitted a memorandum to Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami and alleged that every authority was trying to interpret the instructions in its own manner. There was no uniformity or clarity in the implementation of the instructions. “In many circumstances, the instructions are being used to create a fear psychosis among political activists,” he alleged.

He urged the Election Commission to intervene and instruct the poll authorities not to commit excesses in the name of implementing the code of conduct.

V.S. Ugrappa, MLC and Congress leader, also met Mr. Gopalaswami and the two Election Commissioners and briefed them about the “misuse” of power by the election authorities.

CPI(M) Secretary V.J.K. Nair has appealed for steps against illegal movement of liquor.
