Nandas granted bail

Staff Reporter

To be released on bail bond of Rs.1 lakh each

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted bail to defence dealer Suresh Nanda, his son Sanjeev Nanda, their chartered accountant Bipin Shah and Income Tax Deputy Director (Investigation) Ashutosh Verma in a case of alleged manipulation of evidence in the Barak missile deal in which Suresh Nanda is an accused.

Granting bail to the four accused, Justice S. Muralidhar said the four accused would be released on furnishing a bail bond of Rs.1 lakh each with one surety of like amount.

Suresh Nanda in his bail application had argued that there was no material with the CBI to nail him down on the allegations as the transcripts of telephonic conversations between the Nandas, the chartered accountant and Ashutosh Verma did not reveal commission of any offence.

He had also submitted that the charges levelled against him were bailable.

A Delhi court had on April 5 refused to grant bail to the accused persons.

Rejecting their bail applications, Special CBI Judge I. K. Kochhar had said that the investigation was at the initial stage and releasing them on bail at this point would hamper it.

The CBI had arrested the four accused on March 8 at a hotel in Mumbai. The four had allegedly gathered there to discuss manipulation of certain documents relating to the missile deal.

The CBI alleged that Verma had recovered the documents during a raid at the Nandas’ residence here. He had kept it in his possession with the intent to strike a deal with Suresh Nanda, the CBI charged.
