dated April 30, 1958: Nuclear engineering unit

A unit for nuclear engineering and a gas turbine research centre will shortly be established in the Indian Institute of Science. A study of the two subjects will be made by the Director of the Institute, Dr. S. Bhagavantam, during a three week tour of the Soviet Union as a member of the delegation of 15 Indian scientists. Dr. Bhagavantam told UPI in Bangalore on April 27 that as a physicist, he would interest himself with different branches of physics and also study the educational methods with special reference to technical education. That Russia had produced a large number of technologists and scientists in a comparatively short time implied that their methods of training would have some special features. At present, he said, four Russian professors of very high calibre were working in the Indian Institute of Science. They had already spent a good deal of their time in learning English.
