Letters to the Editor
I was shocked to read the views expressed by Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray on the cheerleaders at IPL matches. One wonders why his views get such prominence in the media. Politicians are trying hard to create a controversy where none exists and the media are playing into their hands. Cheerleading is a profession in western countries and I don’t find anything wrong with it. Nor do I find anything culturally offensive in the cheerleaders’ attire. Film actors wear skimpier dresses in movies. Pulluri Dheeraj, Hyderabad When our country has millions of crazy fans to cheer the cricket teams, what is the need to import cheerleaders? Having said that, I also feel we have no right to criticise them for the clothes they wear. Do we condemn our film stars for the clothes they wear on screen? Can we ask the cheerleaders to wear salwar kameez when our own actors wear bikinis? S. Vidhyalalitha, Vellore
