KOLKATA: Even as the CPI(M) Polit Bureau appealed to all Left parties here on Tuesday to “unitedly rebuff the anti-Left mahajot [grand alliance]” in next month’s panchayat elections in West Bengal, veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu regretted that the Left Front constituents were not united at all levels to the desired extent. Differences persist over seat adjustments for the three-tier panchayat polls though “the understanding now is much better than it was previously.” Efforts were still on to reach an understanding at places where it remained elusive, Mr. Basu said. “We will fight back”CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat said: “It is clear that all anti-Marxist forces are getting together at the grass-root levels to thwart the Left Front, which will fight back to rip off this mahajot. “What is most disturbing is that the self-styled Maoists have started their activities again. They are targeting and killing CPI(M) cadres — in 2008 so far 13 CPI(M) comrades have been killed, from March 2006 to 2007, 19 were killed. These elements are working as agents of reactionary forces.”
