Spice launches 3G handsets

NEW DELHI: Anticipating rollout of 3G (Third Generation) mobile services soon, Spice Mobiles on Tuesday launched two 3G handsets based on both GSM and CDMA technologies in collaboration with Qualcomm.

The first Indian-branded handsets are priced at Rs. 6,500 (CDMA-enabled handset) and Rs. 8,500 (GSM 3G handset). The GSM handset, S-950, has a 2-mega pixel camera, and music player apart from the normal 3G features such as video recording, MP3, e-mail, video MMS and FM radio, while the CDMA handsets, C-180, comes with a 1.3 mega pixel camera, MP3, FM radio and Bluetooth.

Launching the handsets here, Spice Mobiles Vice-President, Dilip Modi, said the company aimed to sell around five lakh of these new handsets in the current fiscal, while its overall sales of standard handsets could cross 40 lakh. “We hope to clock a turnover of Rs. 1,000 crore this financial year,” he added.

“We are launching the first Indian 3G-enabled device with technical collaboration with Qualcomm. The Indian CDMA market has been operator-dependent. We are offering open market CDMA handsets,” Mr. Modi added.

According to Qualcomm India President, Kanwalinder Singh, Qualcomm was pleased to collaborate with Spice Mobiles to introduce the first Indian branded 3G handset and an open market CDMA handset.
