Biranchi case: PIL seeks arrest of IAS officer

CUTTACK: Judo coach Biranchi Das murder case took a turn on Tuesday when a Cuttack-based youth filed a PIL in Orissa High Court seeking court’s direction to arrest senior IAS officer Priyabrat Patnaik for his alleged link in the sensational case.

Manas Ranjan Sahu filed the writ basing on the statements given by Chagala alias Akhshaya Behera who was arrested from Bhopal in connection with the murder case.

The petition said the statements of a co-accused can be taken as prima facie evidence and on the basis of it, the IAS officer can be arrested, the petition said.

The HC however, has not taken any cognizance of the petition.

Speaking to The Hindu, the petitioner advocate Arun Kumar Budhia said he has a merit in the case and was hopeful that the court would take cognizance of the PIL.

He said the senior IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh R.K.Sharma who was convicted recently was arrested on the basis of the statement of a co-accused.

The lawyer questioned that when another senior IPS officer of the State, Sanjib Marik is now placed under suspension on the basis of statements of a co-accused, why the same principle would not be applied in this case too.
