Cyclonic storm further intensifies

BHUBANESWAR: The severe cyclonic storm that surfaced over Bay of Bengal further intensified and took shape of very severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday.

Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre warned that, “Monday’s severe cyclonic storm ‘NARGIS’ over south west and adjoining south east and west central Bay of Bengal moved northerly direction, intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm and lay centred over west central and adjoining south west and south east Bay of Bengal at about 600 km south of Gopalpur.” On Monday, the met office said the cyclonic storm had turned into a severe cyclonic storm.

“However, the latest satellite imageries indicate that system is unlikely to move towards Orissa coast,” Director Bhubaneswar met centre S. C Sahu said.

“The system is likely to move in a northerly direction,” he said.

Though the met centre on Monday had warned that strong and gusty surface wind from south-westerly direction speed reaching 45 to 55 km per hour could blow along and off Orissa coast, it withdrew the warning on Tuesday.

However rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at a few places over South Orissa during the next 48 hours.

Warning signal

Distant warning signal No. TWO (DW-II) was kept hoisted at Paradip and Gopalpur Ports, the met centre sources said.

Meanwhile, the number of deaths due to sunstroke rose to 10 due to heat wave conditions prevailing during last fortnight.
