Thiruvananthapuram: The City Corporation has initiated legal action against the retail outlet of Big Bazaar at Kesavadasapuram that began functioning on Monday evening. The Corporation Food Inspector has filed a case against the retailer under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act for the failure to procure the licence. “The Act prohibits the sale of food materials without a PFA licence. The case was registered after the Food Inspector verified the unauthorised sale of food items,” said Johnson K. George, Corporation secretary. Meanwhile, the Corporation’s effort to close down the new outlet for unauthorised operation was thwarted by a High Court stay secured by the Big Bazaar management on Tuesday. “We received a copy of the order directing us to maintain status quo up to May 6,” Mr. George said. Chairman of the Corporation’s Health standing committee G.R. Anil said the outlet had started functioning on Monday evening under police protection without securing the trade licence from the local body. “They are yet to respond to our directive asking them to take a permit for the two generators installed in the building.”
