Pallavan Express delayed by an hour

TAMBARAM: A failure in the locomotive resulted in the super fast Pallavan Express, between Tiruchi and Chennai, getting stranded for about an hour near Vandalur Railway Station on Tuesday morning.

While eye witnesses and commuters told reporters that the pantorod, connecting the electric locomotive with the overhead traction wire had failed, Southern Railway sources said it was just a mechanical failure.

The Pallavan Express was nearing the Vandalur station around 10.45 a.m. when it came to a halt . An eye-witness from Vandalur told The Hindu that the pantorod had caused the problem.

However, enquiries revealed that the electric locomotive had developed mechanical problems and efforts to repair it on the spot would not have been of any help.

Hence, another locomotive was summoned from Tambaram that hauled the Express till Egmore.

As a result, the train suffered a delay of nearly one hour, the officials said.

As a result, the gates at the level crossing near the station too could not be opened, resulting in traffic problems on Grand Southern Trunk Road and Vandalur-Wallajahbad Radial Road.

After waiting for some time inside the compartments, many passengers got down, walked to GST Road and boarded buses and autorickshaws to reach Tambaram.
