Crackdown on LTTE in Britain

LONDON: In a significant breakthrough in their investigations into the activities of LTTE, the counter-terror police on Tuesday arrested three men for allegedly providing support to a banned terrorist organisation.

The arrests followed early-morning raids on addresses in England and Wales and the alleged suspects were brought to a high-security police station in central London for questioning.

Sources said two of the three arrested were brothers who ran a company manufacturing circuit boards and other radio communications equipment. The three were alleged to have been involved in manufacturing components used in explosive devices and in procuring and paying for purchase of weapons/equipment by LTTE.

Police said the arrests related to a long-term investigation and were not linked to “Al-Qaeda type activity”.

Sri Lanka High Commission said the arrests “confirmed” that the front organisations were engaged in illegally providing material and moral support to LTTE.
