Building will have adequate parking area It will cater to applicants from five districts
Coimbatore: The passport office at Coimbatore which will cater to five districts in the western region is likely to be inaugurated before the end of May, tentatively between May 20 and 30, Regional Passport Officer, Chennai, Sumathi Ravichandran said on Wednesday. Ms. Ravichandran was talking to The Hindu after inspecting the ongoing works for the passport office at the Corporation complex on Avanashi Road near the flyover. She was accompanied by the project officer of the Ministry of External Affairs K.N. Sharma and the executive engineer (west zone), Pa.Ganeshwaran of the Coimbatore Corporation. The passport office will be located on the first floor of the shopping complex on the rear side in a 12,000 square feet area and the building will have adequate parking area besides lift and separate toilets for the physically challenged. She said with most of the civil works nearing completion, the building is likely to be handed over by the Corporation to the passport office by May 5. It would require 10 to 12 days to have sufficient infrastructure such as computers and manpower. The office would cater to applicants from the five districts of western Tamil Nadu, namely Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Coimbatore and the Nilgiris. It would render all services such as issuance, reissuance, renewal and issuance of passports under tatkal, besides miscellaneous endorsements in passports. Though the staff strength had not been finalised, she said the required staff would be made available. At present the District Passport Cell at the collectorate alone gets on an average 2,500 applications every month.
