Rs.1.82 crore for desilting

ARIYALUR: A sum of Rs. 1.82 crore is to be spent for desilting and deepening channels, strengthening bunds, and repairing and replacing shutters of five anicuts at Kulumur, Kaadur, Veeravasi, Marakkurichi and Chelliamman odai and 18 lakes in the district under the IAMWARM (Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Bodies Restoration and Management) Project.
According to Project Director Vibu Nair, who along with Collector R. Sudalaikannan, convened a meeting of officials of PWD and other departments on Wednesday, works in the Anai Vari Odai Sub Basin would commence during June and completed in 14 months. Out of the project cost, Rs. 10 lakh would be spent for ground water replenishment through percolation ponds and digging of borewells and Rs. 2 lakh would be utilised for environmental development. On May 2, a group of agriculturists would be taken to a few model villages in Pudukkottai district to observe the technologies of improving productivity with judicious use of water.
