Project has a base of 36 lakh families Aashraya scheme to be extended to more places
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Samagra project aimed at developing a comprehensive production and marketing network of an agriculture product will be extended to all 14 districts to mark the 10th anniversary celebrations of Kudumbasree, Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty has said. Mr. Kutty told reporters here on Wednesday that the Kudumbasree movement launched by the E.K. Nayanar government in 1998 for poverty eradication had gained strength with a base of 36 lakh families. Various projects estimated to cost Rs.191 crore would be launched under Samagra in the coming years. It would work in coordination with Food and Agriculture Departments to attain self-sufficiency in the production of egg, milk and vegetables and support the Suchitwa Mission’s ‘Clean Kerala’ campaign. Local developmentLocal Administration Principal Secretary S.M.Vijayanand said that the scope of Kudumbasree would be widened with a special focus on local economic development involving Scheduled Castes, tribes, BPL families and other sections who had not yet become part of the movement. So far Rs.984 crore had been collected as deposit from the neighbourhood groups and Rs.542 crore had been provided to 91,711 neighbourhood groups through bank linkages. It was proposed to increase the bank linkages at least by five times in the coming days. Aashraya schemeThe Aashraya scheme for the destitute would be extended to more places. Aashraya, which won the Prime Minister’s Civil Services Day Award, had 50,000 beneficiaries. By extending the scope, the scheme was expected to benefit more people soon, Mr. Vijayanand said. Mr. Kutty said Kudumbasree had no political affiliations and it was specifically meant for empowering poor women and those in the BPL bracket. It was unfortunate that Congress leaders in the State as well as those who wield power at the Centre have taken the reins of Janasree as an alternative to Kudumbasree which had been functioning in a flawless manner for the past one decade, he said.
