THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposals put forward by a committee headed by Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty for implementation of the recommendations of the Sachar committee on minorities.

The proposals include formation of a Department for Minority Welfare and speeding up of welfare programmes for minorities on the lines of the programmes for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes. Scholarships would be provided to students belonging to minority communities besides taking up other welfare measures for minorities, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told journalists here after the weekly Cabinet meeting.

Mr. Achuthanandan said that intensive cleanliness operations would be carried out throughout the State from May 9 to 15 to prevent spreading of diseases during monsoon. A Minister would be in charge of the operations in each district. The administration of the Malabar Cancer Hospital would be transferred from the Kerala State Electricity Board to the Health Department.

The deputation of Shriram Bharat as Managing Director of Cochin International Airport Limited would be ended and Director Board member C.G. Krishnadas Nair would be given temporary charge.

Neela Gangadharan, who is returning from Central deputation, would be appointed as Commissioner of Land Revenue. IAS Officer Puneet Kumar would be appointed as Joint Excise Commissioner.

Asked about the policy of the government on local workers imposing ‘nokucoolie’ for work done by others, the Chief Minister said he would respond to the question after the government studied the issue. It needed serious examination.
