Letters to the Editor
Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit to India will boost the relations between the two countries. With the proposed Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline set to be given a final shape, things are looking up for both countries. The U.S., I hope, would have got the message that as a democratic country, we follow an independent foreign policy. It should give up the illusion that the proposed India-U.S. nuclear deal will allow it to have a say in our foreign policy. If Washington still insists on dictating terms, New Delhi would do well to scrap the deal. Bishal Das, New Delhi Mr. Ahmadinejad’s visit, first by an Iranian head of state in five years, was welcome. By not giving in to Washington’s pressure that it should not go ahead with the IPI pipeline, New Delhi has asserted its sovereignty. Naveen Marrapu, Hyderabad One hopes the brief visit by the Iranian President will help to tide over the low that has marked the relations between Tehran and New Delhi in the last couple of years. The IPI gas pipeline is of great strategic importance to India’s energy security. The pending issues regarding implementation of the project need to be sorted out at the earliest in our interest. Salin Thomas, Kottayam
