Thrissur, Kannur take titles

KANNUR: Thrissur boys and Kannur girls won the titles in the 25th Kerala State youth basketball championships at the Marygiri Senior Secondary School here on Wednesday.

In the boys’ section, Thrissur defeated defending champion Pathanamhitta 67-43 after leading 36-14 at half-time.

For Thrissur, Amit Sebastian (23 points) and Shebin Shamsudeen (21) did the bulk of the scoring. Arun K. Thomas (16) excelled for Pathanmthitta.

Wayanad took the third spot after defeating Ernakulam 33-17.

In the girls’ category, Kannur rode on P.S. Neenumol’s brilliance to crush defending champion Kollam 57-28 after leading 29-12 at half-time.

Kollam’s key player Smruthy was off-colour and her team had to pay the price for it.

Kottayam scraped past Thrissur 37-36 to finish third.

The results:

Boys (final): Thrissur 67 (Amit Sebastian 23, Shebin Shamsudeen 21) bt Pathanamthitta 43 (Arun K. Thomas 16, Richard Baby 11, Nithin Paul Stephan 10).

Loser’s final: Wayanad 33 (C. Sharath 10) bt Ernakulam 17.

Girls (final): Kannur 57 (P.S. Neenumol 16) bt Kollam 28 (Libiya Varghese 10).

Loser’s final: Kottayam 37 (Sona M. Saji 21) bt Thrissur 36 (Lidhya Varghese 15).
