Move to shift wood depot opposed

KORAPUT: The Koraput Citizen Forum has expressed concern over the proposed shifting of the only firewood depot from its present place near the weekly market in the town . The wood depot which has been in the place for the last many years would now be shifted to a far-off place from the town if the differences between the Orissa Forest Development Corporation (OFDC) and the Notified Area Council (NAC) , Koraput over the increase of lease amount were not solved, Uttam Chakravorty, depot manager, said .

While the depot had been paying Rs.884 per year to the NAC authorities till last financial year, it was asked to deposit a rent of Rs.3 lakh per year from this year, he alleged . The depot management has however expressed its inability to pay such an increase of the lease amount.

Considering the importance of the wood depot catering largely to the requirement of the cremation ground, the Koraput Citizen Forum has urged the authorities to reach an amicable solution at the earliest. The wood depot had been out of stock for the last few months because of the conflict, the forum added.
