BERHAMPUR: Congress activists demonstrated on the MKCG medical college hospital campus on Wednesday demanding better amenities for patients.

They also threatened to start hunger strike in front of the hospital if their demands were not fulfilled within next 15 days. Led by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) member, Bikram Panda and city Congress president, Sanjit Panigrahy they also handed over a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister to superintendent of the medical college hospital. The memorandum contained 16 demands.

They also led the superintendent to the diarrhoea ward of the medical college hospital to make him aware of the non-functioning fans and choked latrines. Several persons from gastro-hit villages on the outskirts of the city have started to pour into this ward since Tuesday. The superintendent promised to get the fans and latrines in the ward repaired by evening.

The Congress activists demanded better sanitation and facilities at the medical college hospital, which happens to be the only referral hospital in south Orissa. They wanted all vacant posts of nurses, technicians and sanitary workers filled. A special ICU for burn victims, fully functional neurosurgery and neurology departments and proper functioning of the inaugurated trauma centre on the campus were in the list of their demands. They also pointed out that middlemen were active on the medical college campus to lure patients to private hospitals and wanted curbs and action against them.
