Vijender Gupta re-elected

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Vijender Gupta and Yogender Chandolia of the Bharatiya Janata Party were unanimously re-elected to the posts of Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Standing Committee respectively at a special meeting in Town Hall on Wednesday.

The outcome of the elections was largely expected since members of the opposing parties including the Congress had also decided to support Mr. Gupta and Mr. Chandolia for their posts.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Gupta enumerated the achievements of the civic body over the past one year and apprised the gathering of the plans for the coming days.

‘Many achievements’

“We have provided Rs.272 crore for development works in all the wards while Rs.3 crore per zone has been provided to each ward committee. A sum of Rs.12.5 crore has been provided for development works under the discretionary quota of the Mayor and Chairman while Rs.287.5 crore has been allocated for development works directed by various Councillors,” said Mr. Gupta.

The newly-elected Chairman also touched on other issues that the civic body was working towards such as scholarships being provided to girls studying in its primary schools, initiation of the anaemia control programme in schools, improvement and maintenance of the quality of the mid-day meal as well as raising the salary of teachers.

Focus on sanitation

Talking of the civic body’s focus on sanitation, Mr. Gupta said: “Soon the Bangalore pattern of garbage collection will be started. We have also started to develop sanitation facilities in the 1,539 unauthorised colonies at a cost of Rs.25 crore.”

Giving details of future projects, Mr. Gupta said a “Mahila Haat” would be set up next year.
